When travelling anywhere in the world, the number one question on travellers' minds is, "Where can I get some beer and a good meal?"
Detroit has some fantastic bars and a legendary nightlife. You'll never know who you're going to run into on the streets of the Motor City. Here's a quick list of our favorites to get you started:
BARS (in no particular order):
GREEKTOWN - Detroit's most famous neighborhood of restaurants, bars and casino. Main corridor along Monroe St.
Old Shillelagh - Legendary Detroit irish bar
Niki's Pizza - Great place for late night food. Just south of Greektown on Beaubien St.
Sweetwater Tavern - Best ribs and chicken wings in the city.
Jacoby's - The place to go for great beer downstairs and great music upstairs.
Bouzouki Lounge - Feeling adventurous? Hit up this gentlemen's club. Always a good time.
The Shelter - Close to the Marriott and site of Eminem's freestyle battles in the movie "Eight Mile." Basement of St. Andrews Hall, entrance in back.
THE THEATER DISTRICT
Hockeytown Cafe - Nextdoor to the Fox Theater and across the street from Comerica Park.
Cheli's Chili - Chris Chelios's popular bar next to Comerica Park
The Elwood - Great historical bar on the best piece of property in Detroit, smack in-between Comerica and Ford Field.
Hard Rock Cafe - Standard Hard Rock stuff.
The Well - Dark, awesome, true Detroit style.
Cobo Joe's - Detroit favorite with some of the best pizza in town.
The Post - Legendary place to hang out before, during and after a Red Wings game.
PLACES TO BUY BEER:
Athens Liquor & Smoke Outlet - If you're hanging out in Greektown, here's your beer store.
Millender Center Food Plaza
Tunnel Liquor & Gifts Shoppe - Probably the closest. Located in the Millender Center across the street from your hotel. Don't remember where in Millender it is, though.
Downtown Detroit Directory - Excellent resource for info and maps.
AtDetroit.net - an excellent discussion board of everything Detroit.
There are a ton of more excellent hang-outs that haven't been mentioned, but you cannot go wrong with visiting any of these bars. I know there are many more favorites that I'll catch heat for by not listing, and I'll try to update the list again in the future.
